How necessary is grade 12 university-bound English?

English teaches students to “develop proficiency in the four domains of language: speaking, reading, listening, and writing” (Breiseth). When it becomes time for students to decide whether they are going to university and/or college, they will be in their final year of high school. All post-secondary programs will have prerequisites that students will need to have taken in order to be accepted into the program. Now the tough part is, should grade 12 university-bound English be a prerequisite to applying to any program?

To be accepted into university programs I believe you do need to have completed grade 12 university English. The reason why it is important to take the course and have successfully completed it is that the course teaches you how to prepare for university English. It shows that you are able to analyze texts, properly format, and have appropriate levels of grammar and spelling. The English courses in universities are going to be tougher and require the skills that the students will have gained throughout each new course.

If the program leads to any occupation or business that requires writing, reports, or any paperwork it is important that they understand how to properly complete them as well as remain professional. Now having completed the grade 12 university English, it will display that the students will have shown that they have sustainable knowledge that was taught to them.

Yes, I believe grade 12 university-bound English is an essential stepping stone for university programs. However, there may be some exceptions regarding specialized programs.
